Don't Try Any of This At Home, Kids.

I teach middle school.  The kids loved this one.  The song is incidental; but such a web video … a collection of people doing stupid stuff.  Hooray for technology.  Thanks to Caleb Miller for the tip.

Lux Aurumque – performed by a virtual choir

I heard this on my Spark podcast today. (I’m a little behind.)
Written by Eric Whitacre, he put the score online and a video of himself conducting. Hundreds submitted videos of themselves singing their choral part. Beautiful – and remarkably well done.

I Am A Sucker for Flash-Mob Videos

I know, we haven’t posted in a while (and the public outcry has been deafening) … so to appease the masses, a collection of flash mob videos.
I am an absolute sucker for them.  They bring tears to my eyes.  Its like a Broadway music brought to life.  Here’s a few of my favourites:
A few T-Mobile ones. Thanks to Jeffrey Russell Dempster (the other Dumpster) for making me watch these.

There are a few Hallelujah Chorus (one of my favourite pieces of music of all time flashmob videos – but this one has the best sound.

This one is pretty well done as well. Imagine getting all those people to sign waivers, however …

An oldie, but a goodie.

Rules for Worship

Please pay particular attention to the section on clapping.

Tip of the hat (outside the sanctuary, of course) to Jamie D. Bay for this one.

New Brooke Fraser!

The beautifully shot teaser for Brooke Fraser's new album.  Apparently available and doing very well in New Zealand, where I no longer live.

The Best / Creepiest Use of Stock Footage

A cool / disconcerting video … Ratatat made their entire music video for “Drugs” using commercial stock footage.

Cringe-inducing.

Star Wars Trilogy - Retold With Lego

It’s like two favourite things from my childhood combined.

Best line: “That was when the boy got some very surprising news about his dad.”

4 Chord Pop Song (Explicit Language)

warning … explicit language (they’re Australian … does it still count with the accent?)
But sing along.

Dreams Come True

Ok, I’m late … the whole LipDub thing is new to me, but this is grrreat!  I wanna do this for my school now.  Tip o’ the hat to Mareika for this one.

Air NZ Flight Safety Video

From my favourite airline.  So pay attention to this important safety announcement.
Respect to Terry O'Reilly (in general) and the Age of Persuasion for this one.

"What A Wonderful World" - Good Morning Vietnam

This is probably the most influential piece of editing in my life.
I saw this movie when I was about 13 with my dad, and remember choking on my root beer because it was so funny, but this montage is so poignant that I think I cried.

And apparently I've been trying to recreate it in half the pieces I've done since 1987.

Adulthood

On this, my 35th birthday ... the truest comic I've ever seen.

Dave Eggers on TED

I like Dave Eggers' books (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, What is the What) and I really like McSweeney's, (and the screenplay for Where the Wild Things Are) but I love this video.  It lived on my desktop for about 7 months (and nothing lives on my desktop).  The most inspiring half an hour I've ever seen.

The Power of the Pentatonic Scale

Science and music! Together! It works!
C'mon, tell me you weren't singing the notes in your head.
Here's the blurb:
"Bobby McFerrin demonstrates the power of the pentatonic scale, using audience participation, at the event "Notes & Neurons: In Search of the Common Chorus", from the 2009 World Science Festival, June 12, 2009."

Frosty Man & the BMX Kid

The 5 movies from the NZ Your Big Break contest are pretty excellent - they're being judged by (Sir) Peter Jackson - but this is (in my opinion) the excellent-est.

Seriously, I've watched it about 14 times. I laugh every time.
My students wanted to know what language it is.
Chur, bru!
Oh and this one was the people's choice winner, it's pretty alright too.

I have a blog. Doesn't everyone?

Because everyone has a blog, I do too.
Thank you for reading this ... it's a collection of things I like; an online scrapbook: some professional, some purely personal enjoyment.
Let the wild rumpus start.
